Technical Consultancy for Implementation of Rural Sanitation in Kerala

How can Kerala develop a more sustainable system for solid and liquid waste management?

With its lead implementing partner, Centre for Environment and Development (CED), Athena supported Jalanidhi II, the Government of Kerala’s World Bank funded rural sanitation project. Providing technical support to Suchithwa Mission and the KRWSA, Athena’s unique approach was to build the required templates and frameworks for streamlining interaction between the local bodies and the mission, which has a strong focus on empowering local bodies to undertake ‘self assessments’ and design sanitation plans that best fit their local context through participatory processes. This was done through various means such as providing support to small town/village governments (Gram Panchayats), working with the local community on waste management, awareness and behavior change initiatives (through innovative new-generation community IEC and community mobilization activities), and hand-holding support to Jalanidhi, Suchithwa Mission teams.
