How can we support Kerala to develop a more sustainable sanitation system for solid and liquid waste management?
Athena supported Jalanidhi II, the Government of Kerala’s World Bank funded rural sanitation project, along with its lead, CED. Athena provided technical support to Suchithwa Mission and the KRWSA, building templates and frameworks for streamlining interaction between various bodies. It focused on empowering local bodies to undertake ‘self assessments’ and design context-specific sanitation plans through participatory processes. Athena achieved this by supporting small town/village governments (Gram Panchayats) and working with the local community on waste management. It also developed awareness and behavior change initiatives (through innovative new-generation community IEC and community mobilization activities). This was in addition to hand-holding support provided to the Jalanidhi and Suchithwa Mission teams.
